Hey ladies, have you noticed? We live in a world that constantly tells us what our weaknesses are, how we aren’t measuring up, what we need to change in order to be good enough, to be successful, to be accepted. It’s time for a change, sister! It is time to embrace who we are, the way we are. It is time to say no more to the toxic messaging. It's time to love ourselves just the way we are. It is time to embrace yourself.
And what better way to celebrate self-acceptance than with the queen of body positivity herself, Lizzo? There is one particular story about Lizzo that first of all totally resonated with me and second of all made me respect her in a way that I don’t normally share with celebrities. At the 2022 Emmy awards Lizzo said “When I was a little girl, all I wanted to see was me in the media. Someone fat like me. Black like me. Beautiful like me. If I could go back and tell little Lizzo something, I would be like, ‘You’re going to see that person, but bitch, it’s going to have to be you.”
When I was figuring out what this business was going to be, how I would work with women, I was struggling with not feeling like I was enough. Not educated enough, not thin enough, not pretty enough, not smart enough. My favorite business coach made me listen to Lizzo’s message and said girl, you are a badass. It is time for you to do this. That landed for me because I am trying to share the same damn message. When I’m not feeling it I turn on Lizzo’s song “Good as Hell”. It is a perfect reminder that we don’t need anyone else’s approval to feel good about ourselves. It is freeing and empowering to know that all of that extra noise doesn’t matter. We don’t need permission to live our best life. We can dance to our own beat and love ourselves fiercely.
So let's take a moment to appreciate ourselves. What are you grateful for? Your sense of humor? Your infectious laugh? Your kind heart? Your amazing brain? Your ability to juggle career and family? Take a moment to write down five things you love about yourself, and make a promise to yourself to celebrate those qualities every day.
It's important to remember that self-acceptance is a journey. It's not something that happens overnight, and there may be days when we feel like we're back at square one. That's okay. Progress is progress, no matter how small. And when those negative thoughts start to creep in, put on "Good as Hell" and dance it out.
So, it’s time to stop absorbing those social media messages, stop letting what YOU think other people are going to think or say control you. Stop getting in your own damn way. Remember, you are amazing just the way you are. Your quirks and imperfections make you who you are, and that's something to be proud of. Let's raise a glass to self-acceptance and gratitude, to living life your way. To your happiness and your success. Because we are good as hell, and we deserve to celebrate that every single day.
